Jantar Mantar

It is the astronomical observatory located outside the gate of City palace complex. It was built by Sawai Jai Singh II in 1728. He himself was a very able astronomer.

It is one of the five open air observatories in India.

It has many astronomical instruments used for measuring local time, calculations of astronomy, altitudes of stars and constellations etc.

It has many important instruments like Big Sun Dial, Pole star instrument, Sextant, Direction compass, Ecliptic instrument and several other instruments.
